At Nimbus, we aim to provide students not only with a wealth of knowledge and opportunity, but we provide them with real world experience so they can step into the industry with ease and confidence! Most recently, 2 more students were awarded for their hard work and had the opportunity to head to Garth Richardson’s studio “The Farm Studios”, located on the Sunshine Coast. They were accompanied by Teacher, Campus Director, and Legend Dean Maher! We had the chance to interview one of the students Spencer Yonge, and get an insight on what he experienced while on location; recording a real band for the first time!
Hi Spencer! So to start, how was your experience at The Farm?
My experience as a whole will be something I’ll remember for the rest of my life, and it was truly an honor to be there with Garth and Dean to experience what it’s like in the real world to record a band. So much fun, every single day.
Who were you recording while you were there?
We were working with a Sunshine Coast band called The Empty Streets, featuring a drummer, bass player, two guitar players, and a vocalist! They sounded really good! My favorite song of theirs that we recorded was called “Radio Down” (I’m assuming it’s still unreleased). It had a really chill vibe, and a really catchy hook!
Did you get the chance to use any new gear?
We got to use the Sony c800g, a $10,000 mic! it has a beautiful sound to it, and it was really just a beautiful piece of gear.
I’m sure it was a ton of fun! But were there any challenges you faced?
A challenge I had to overcome was hauling some of the amps around the studio … those things are heavy!
After all was said and done, what was something new you learned?
I learned that producing and recording for a band can be a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of hard work. One of the best things you can do as a helper/runner is to get your work done quickly and efficiently, and observe quietly.
Thanks Spencer! And we wish you all the best while you carry on through the remainder of your time here at Nimbus!
