Current Nimbus students Nick Smalley and Caleb Neilson talk about what it was like working with GGGarth at The Farm Studios and how studying at Nimbus has prepared them for these opportunities.
How did the opportunity to assist at The Farm Studios arise?
Nick: “A couple of weeks ago GGGarth posted to Nimbus students that he was tuning vocals and any students were welcome to come. I personally love tuning vocals, and I want to be a tuning master, so I thought it would be an incredible opportunity to learn straight from GGGarth”.
What were you working on?
Caleb: “We got the opportunity to practice comping and tuning vocals. There were two other students helping Nick and I, so we would all take turns comping and tuning. GGGarth was there to mentor us and tell us what sounded good and what needed to be changed”.
How was the experience?
Nick: “I really enjoyed my time at The Farm. It was such a cool experience and I feel very lucky be able to learn from GGGarth. GGGarth is so open to having students come hang out and The Farm and learn”.
Did you feel prepared and confident at the studio?
Nick: “I can really tell that the Nimbus curriculum is designed with the real world in mind. When I turned up to The Farm, I felt prepared. All the skills I’ve gained studying at Nimbus really helped me feel confident in the studio”.
Caleb: “Yes! At Nimbus not only do you get the skills needed but you also learn all of the common courtesies of the studio. You turn up, you know the lingo, so you feel confident”.
What kind of feedback did you get from GGGarth?
Caleb: “When you’re at the studio with GGGarth, he is super involved. He is such a great teacher”.
Nick: “GGGarth is really hands-on at the studio when teaching. He gave me the opportunity to watch, then I was given a chance to tune the vocals myself”.
Have you been back to The Farm Studios?
Nick: “Yes I have been helping out Nimbus instructor Scott Ternan with the re-amping of the guitars at The Farm”.
Caleb: “Not long after, I got the opportunity to be at The Farm while GGGarth was recording vocals. I had such a great time just watching and seeing how GGGarth records people and what he is looking for when he is recording. I took my note-pad so I was able to pick up so many tips’.
Anything else to add?
Nick: “Yes! I want to say I am having the time of my life at Nimbus.”
