Today we’re going to talk about 3 accidental “spazz” clicks that can happen in Pro Tools and how to solve them. What do we mean when we say “spazz” clicks? These are any clicks you make by accident when you are trying to click something else.
If your focus keys are enabled (check the little yellow square at the top right corner of your edit window), it will implement the zoom toggle feature. If zoom toggle is enabled, the track selected will jump up and fit to the previously determined zoom functions. In some cases it might grow really large and take up too much room on the session. The reason this button gets hit accidentally is because it’s right beside the zoom in/zoom out buttons R/T, buttons that you are very commonly going to hit. So you might be toggling in and out and accidentally bump the E (zoom toggle), then boom all of a suddenly your screen is too big. To avoid this, you can toggle using the little blue button under the magnifying glass.
Usually when I’m playing back something, I like it to continually play from the same spot (for example, the beginning of the track). I often hit the ‘N’ button by mistake because it’s right above the play/stop button (space). If I press play and then hit stop after hitting the N button by mistake, it’s going to play from where I left off and not snap back to the beginning. To turn that off, just toggle ‘N’ again. Also, underneath the pencil tool at the top of the edit you will find the button to switch it. Now if I press play it will play from the spot I want it to.
The #1 button that often gets me into trouble is the link track and edit selection button. If selected, this button allows you to select anywhere on your timeline and have it play from there. For example if I select at the intro and hit play, it will play from there. If I select anywhere else on the track, it will play from there. If the “link track and edit selection” button is deselected, no matter where I click on the track, it will always play from the beginning. To solve this, you just need to make sure the button underneath the grabber tool is selected!
