Who: Morgan Coates
Program: Live Sound & Recording
Goals for the Future: Touring as an audio tech with a band and locking in more live sound gigs!
At Nimbus, our goal is to support students and give them the tools they need to create their own future after graduating. Whether it be producing, engineering, mixing or live sound, students are able to realize their ability and fulfil their goals to work in the audio or video industries.
We recently spoke with Nimbus alumnus Morgan Coates who graduated from Nimbus’ Live Sound program in May to hear about how he has been doing.
Since graduating, Morgan has proactively immersed himself in the audio industry, working on numerous music festivals over the summer as well as high profile concerts including: Taylor Swift’s Vancouver dates at BC Place Stadium and Sam Smith at Squamish Valley Music Festival.
Morgan works for POP Entertainment and Riggit Services, Inc, Through these companies he has had the opportunity to join the live sound team for Squamish Music Festival, BreakOut West 2015/Western Canadian Music Awards (partnering with Victoria’s Rifflandia Festival this year), Manito Ahbee Festival/Indigenous Music Awards and Interstellar Rodeo presented by Six Shooter Records.
After working on so many great events with numerous talented artists, we were curious to hear what Morgan’s favourite event has been so far: “I have had the opportunity to work with so many talented artists (July Talk, K-OS, Bend Sinister, Hey Ocean!, Matt Mays and members of Hedley), at so many cool events (SingItFwd, ShoreFest, Remembering Jay Smith, Pemberton Music Festival) during my time at Nimbus so it is SO hard to choose a “favourite event”. I will always remember the time at Nimbus when Garth Richardson took myself and Nimbus alumnus Vincent Diep to meet Michael Buble’s FOH tech and check out their arena tour setup.”
Applied learning is so important in the industry of Live Sound as it is imperative to be able to troubleshoot on the fly and be versatile with your ability. Nimbus provides Live Sound students with real life experience operating live sound for artists in real venues across Vancouver every week. Morgan has been able to use his diverse skill set to add value and expertise to his work place. He explains:
“Nimbus not only prepared me for the live sound world, but for the world of media! I am currently finding myself getting hired to do many different things including: FOH Tech, Monitor Tech, Editing/Mixing and Digital Marketing.”
We are very proud of Morgan and his accomplishments since graduating Nimbus. After hearing of his success, we were curious to know if he would recommend the school to others looking to make strides in the audio industry.
Morgan told us,
“I would definitely recommend Nimbus to others looking to get into live audio and production, as well as any others who are interested in a career in the music industry. Nimbus’ reputation has opened doors and opportunities for me.”
