Joshua Bridger graduated from Nimbus in 2012 with a diploma in Advanced Music Production. A hardstyle music producer, he and his partner Arjan Altafi recently signed to Gearbox Digital, known as the leading hard dance and hardstyle record label.
“The first time I heard Hardstyle, I was driving around in my car cranking music when I decided I wanted to listen to something different,” said Joshua. “My friend had left his iPod in my car so I plugged it in. Scrolling through I came across the name Headhunterz and I thought, “Headhunterz?! Who the f*** is this?!” So I played the first song that popped up under that name.
I was immediately hooked, but at first I mainly thought the music was hilarious and “eurotrash”. Over the next couple weeks, I found I couldn’t stopped listening to this music, looking up more artists, discovering more songs, and then I had an epiphany: I wanted to make this music for a living.”
Joshua knew nothing about music at this point and says he took to the internet where he discovered FL Studio and began testing it out: “I knew nothing, my friends and I would play around on FL Studio, watching Youtube tutorials, and making the worst “songs” imaginable. I wasn’t too serious at first. I was busy being young, going to bars, drinking, etc. But when I was 19, I moved to Vancouver for about 4 months. I stayed there with my Auntie, Uncle and my Dad. While I was there, I worked on my music. My Auntie and I got to talking one day and she told me about how she went to Sound Engineering school and knew GGGarth Richardson. She told me how he owned a music school in Vancouver and that I should consider applying.”
Joshua attended Nimbus from April 2011 until the following spring 2012:
“My year at Nimbus was honestly one of the best years of my life,” he says. “I learned so much, made good friends, and had many good experiences. I wouldn’t take that year back for anything. Sometimes I think about it and can’t believe how much time has passed since that year. I wish sometimes I could relive it. During my time in Vancouver I got opportunities to perform at 2 different Hardstyle shows and meet artists I looked up to. Ever since I moved back to Edmonton I’ve continued to work on music from home, trying to make my dreams and goals happen.”
Joshua and his partner formed “Paradox” and signed to Gearbox Digital at the end of September 2015. He describes his music as “hard hitting fast paced music with style. From heavy distorted kick drums to mesmerizing catchy melodies. Some people struggle with getting into the genre mainly because of the kick drums, but for me, that’s the best part!”
