Current student, Roberto Angel-Dwyer is getting ready to make his debut. In his last few months of Production 200, he has been finishing up his first full length electronic music album featuring numerous collaborations with fellow Nimbus students, alumni and local Vancouver music talent.
“Music is like breathing to me,” says Roberto. “Since the age of 3, music is really all I’ve cared about. I love other arts as well but there’s an emotional and spiritual connection to music that is unparalleled.”
The El Salvador born Canadian, is classically trained in guitar and bass with a passion for electronic music. He started producing at the age of 15. After attending other schools for music, Roberto decided to come to Nimbus, which he says has allowed him to network with a lot of talented people and learn many different styles from mentors and instructors.
“I have learned a lot of technical skills, songwriting and creative skills,” says Roberto. “ENGR 200 taught me how to improve my technical skills and work efficiently/quickly. PROD 200 has given me the time and mentorship to complete the album. Learning and absorbing concepts from Shawn Cole and having an amazingly talented PROD 200 class helps too!”
Roberto’s influences include: Sbtrkt, Shlohmo, Flume, Gorillaz, Boards of Canada, Flying Lotus, Majid Jordan, Kaytranada, and Clams Casino. “I love Jazz, Classical, Progressive Rock/Metal, Groove Metal, Funk, Soul, RNB, Hip Hop. I listen to almost everything!”
Roberto a.k.a. Mentiras
Roberto’s upcoming electronic music project, Mentiras, includes multiple collaborations with Nimbus students and alumni and local Vancouver talent. It will be stylistically similar to Kaytranada, Clams Casino, Flume, Sbtrkt and Shlohmo, he explains. “It fits under the electronic music genre. I really want to bring up all the talented Vancouver musicians and showcase the amazing producers and artists at Nimbus.”
Roberto worked on his new electronic album using Nimbus Studio G and his own laptop. “I had everything in the room [Studio G] hooked up to my laptop so I could use all of the gear available with my own software and plugins. I will be recording vocals at Nimbus as well,” he says. “I’m a bit of a nerd so I had all the synths controllable by my Ableton Push and figured out all the routing.”
“Every Day At Nimbus Is Awesome”
For Roberto, everyday day at Nimbus has been “awesome.” After nearly 16 months at Nimbus, Roberto says that aside from the technical skills, the one thing he learned that he didn’t expect was the interpersonal and communication skills. “A lot of producing and engineering is about just being a genuinely good person,” he says. “Success comes from having a positive attitude and constant determination.”
Roberto is set to graduate this August 2016. Despite his original plans to pursue his music career in Toronto or L.A., he says he has decided to stay in Vancouver. “I want to stay in Vancouver and put it on the map,” he says. Roberto plans to join fellow alumni, Ross and Kieran, at their studio in September, and also work as an assistant engineer at a local studio. “I really want to make music and produce, but I love engineering as well, so having my own space as well as engineering for others is the best of both worlds.” Roberto is also part of a music collective called Real Ideal, which describes itself as: “a networking platform for artists of all mediums and backgrounds to collaborate and create… a varied-content label with the mission of raising self awareness on a global scale through unique, expressive art and participation in social activism.”
“You don’t go anywhere if you don’t step out of your boundaries,” Roberto says. “Nimbus was me taking the final step to push myself into the professional realm, and investing the money to go here was the reinforcement to push and try hard.”
In the future, Roberto plans to work on film scores and dreams of working with artists like Rihanna, Drake, Jay Z, Justin Bieber, but beyond that he says: “I make my stamp on the world… and sneak some advanced music composition into the pop stream. My big goal is to be like Flying Lotus and have a label where I can sign amazing artists and also release my own music.”
