Timed Beat-Making Competition & Producer Showcase

SHOWTIME is a two-part charity event hosted by the Music Industry Students at Nimbus School of Recording Arts and Media on October 13, 2018, 11:00 to 4:00pm at LMA, Nimbus' satellite campus (201 W 7th Ave. Vancouver).

  • In the 1st part of the event, producers and beat-makers alike, will come together to network and show what they are made of in a timed beat-making competition. All contestants will receive a link to a sample pack, they will be required to create a song from within a timeframe. Winners will be chosen based on creativity, musicality and mix quality by a panel of professionals.
  • The 2nd part of the event will offer ALL contestants the opportunity to play one of their own original songs, and receive feedback from the jury and the other producers in the room.

Schedule for SHOWTIME: October 13, 2018

  • 11:00am - Doors open
  • 12:00pm - Introduction
  • 12:15pm - Contestants given link to sample pack, 10 mins to review samples
  • 12:25pm - Timer begins, contestants have 35 minutes to produce their beat
  • 1:00pm - Contestants play beats for judges, judges give feedback
  • 2:00pm - Judges address crowd and submit scores
  • 2:15pm - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awarded, inaugural Showtime Champion is crowned
  • 2:20pm - Break
  • 2:30pm - Producer feedback session begins, attendees get to play their songs for judges to give feedback
  • 4:00pm - Event concludes, closing word from sponsors.
Doors will open at 11:00am, contestants and observers will have one hour to get into the space, pay the entry fee, and get settled in. Doors close at 12:00pm and the event will begin. Founders Alex and Patrick will formally address the room and introduce the judges. Afterwards a quick word from the event sponsors.
At 12:15pm producers are shared the link to the samples pack and given 10 minutes to review the given samples. At 12:25pm, the timer begins and contestants have 35 minutes to produce their beat. At 1:00pm the timer will end; headphones off and hands off keys. Contestants will then be called to come to the front, plug in their computer to the sound system and play their beat. Judges will respond to each submission with feedback.
At 2:00pm the judges will address the crowd and submit their scores to Patrick and Alex. At 2:15pm 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are awarded to the contestants with the highest total scores and the inaugural SHOWTIME champion is crowned. A short break quickly after.
The producer feedback session begins at 2:30pm. Anyone who would like to share a song they have previously produced may do so and receive feedback from the judges. The feedback portion of the event will continue until 4:00 pm, or until everyone who would like to show their music has.
The event will conclude with a word from the founders. 

Frequently Asked Questions

What experience do I need?
This event is open to all, regardless of experience or skill!
What do I need to bring?
Contestants will need to bring headphones and their laptop with their DAW of choice.
What gear am I allowed to use?
Contestants are free to bring any external gear they choose to as long as it takes up minimal space and requires minimal setup time.
Can't I just use my own samples?
No outside audio samples are to be used. Contestents must use at least 5 of the provided samples, placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd will mean they'll have to show the judges where those 5 samples are used.
Can I use my own virtual instruments/synth patches?
Absolutely. Contestents are encouraged to use any virtual instruments/VST's they want to add their own personal flair to their track.
Can I invite my friends to watch me?
Yes! This event is free for observers and contestents are encouraged to invite friends and family.
